EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts the First President of the Court of Cassation during the Napoleonic era, a pivotal figure in the French judiciary system. The image, created by Leopold Massard for Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France" series, published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852, offers a captivating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Napoleonic period. The First President is dressed in the traditional robes and insignia of his office. He wears a long, ermine-trimmed robe, symbolizing his high rank and authority. Over this, he dons a red velvet mantle, fastened with a golden collar, adorned with the fleur-de-lis, the national emblem of France. A white simar, or scarf, is draped around his neck, adding a touch of elegance to his attire. The Court of Cassation, established in 1806, was the highest court in the Napoleonic judiciary system. Its primary function was to review appeals from lower courts and ensure the uniform application of the law. The First President, as the head of the court, presided over its sessions and was responsible for maintaining the integrity and independence of the judiciary. This exquisite lithograph not only captures the visual splendour of the Napoleonic era but also highlights the importance of the judiciary in shaping the legal landscape of France during this period. It serves as a testament to the rich history and enduring legacy of the French judicial system.
