Francois-Ferdinand-Philippe-Louis-Marie d'Orleans, Prince of Joinville (1818-1900), is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph from "Historical Costumes of France" by Paul Lacroix, published in Paris in 1852. The Prince, who was the Duke of Chartres until his father's death in 1842, is shown here in town clothes, dressed in the fashionable attire of the mid-19th century. The Prince of Joinville was a prominent figure in French society and military circles, serving as a naval officer and later becoming a Grand Master of the Order of the Star of India. He was also known for his love of art and literature, and was a patron of the arts.
