Fredensborg Palace Gardens - Normandsalen - Denmark
The Valley of the Norsemen - Farmers and fishermen in stone at Normandsalen - Sculpture museum in Fredensborg, Denmark. The creator of the collection was the Norwegian post driver Jorgen Christensen Garns. In his spare time, he would cut small wooden figures depicting the people he met on his mail route. One day he was given a prestigious order. His wooden figures had come into the hands of King Frederick V who now ordered a set of ivory and walrus tooth figures to model a series of life-size characters depicting ordinary people. Sculptures of Scandinavias farmers and fishermen were to appear in Fredensborg Palace Gardens where they still reside! Date: 1903

1. Title: "The Valley of the Norsemen: A Living Tribute to Scandinavian Farmers and Fishermen in Fredensborg Palace Gardens, Denmark" 2. Description: This photograph showcases Normandsalen, a unique sculpture museum nestled within the serene Fredensborg Palace Gardens in Denmark. The Valley of the Norsemen, as it is affectionately known, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Scandinavia, with life-size sandstone figures of farmers and fishermen adorning the pillars of an amphitheater. The enchanting collection was the brainchild of Jorgen Christensen Garnas, a Norwegian post driver in his spare time. Intrigued by the people he encountered on his mail route, Jorgen began carving small wooden figures as a hobby. Little did he know that his creations would soon capture the attention of King Frederick V. In 1903, the king was so impressed with Jorgen's wooden figures that he commissioned a set of ivory and walrus tooth figures, requesting a series of life-size characters depicting ordinary Scandinavian farmers and fishermen. These remarkable sculptures now grace the gardens of Fredensborg Palace, a stunning display of late 18th-century craftsmanship. The Valley of the Norsemen is a captivating blend of history, art, and nature, inviting visitors to explore the stories of the people who shaped Scandinavia's past. The figures, arranged in circles around the amphitheater, create a sense of community and connection, transporting us back to a simpler time. This photograph, taken in 1903, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the enduring legacy of Jorgen Christensen Garnas and the rich cultural heritage of Scandinavia.
