EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment in 1863 when a column of French soldiers, led by General de Berthier, crossed the river and advanced into Plan-del-Rio during the French intervention in Mexico. The soldiers, mounted on horseback, can be seen making their way through the water, their uniforms glistening in the sunlight as they navigate the shallow ford. In the background, a wooden bridge spans the river, providing an alternate route for the advancing troops. General de Berthier, a veteran of Napoleon Bonaparte's army, played a key role in the French invasion of Mexico, which was orchestrated in response to the political instability that followed the overthrow of Mexican President Benito Juarez. The French forces, numbering around 6,000 men, landed at Veracruz in March 1863 and began their march towards Mexico City. The crossing of the river at Plan-del-Rio marked an important milestone in the French advance, as it brought them closer to their ultimate goal of capturing the Mexican capital. The invasion ultimately proved successful, with Maximilian I, a Habsburg archduke, being installed as the new Mexican emperor in 1864. However, the French intervention also resulted in significant loss of life and destruction, and it was not until 1867 that the Mexican people were able to regain control of their country. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in Mexican history, as the French army, led by General de Berthier, made their way across the river and advanced towards their next objective.
