EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th century print depicts a gentleman fencer in the midst of disarming his opponent after a successful parry. The intricate dance of swordplay is beautifully captured in this copperplate engraving, created by D. Jenkins based on an illustration drawn from life by J. Roberts. The source of this exquisite image can be traced back to Mr. J. Olivier's Fencing Familiarized, or A New Treatise on the Art of Sword Play, published in London in 1771. The gentleman fencer, dressed in elegant attire, stands confidently with his epee (a type of light, thrusting sword) held firmly in his right hand. His opponent, momentarily off-balance, is shown with his foil (a lighter, thrusting weapon) raised in a defensive croise position. The fencer has expertly parried his opponent's attack using the depee (a defensive parry with the edge of the sword) and is now seizing the opportunity to disarm him. The deft use of the sword, the focused expressions, and the precise body language of both fighters convey the intensity and skill required in this elegant yet dangerous duel. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 18th century fencing, providing a unique insight into the artistry, strategy, and athleticism involved in this ancient martial art.
