EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a scene of elegant gentleman fencers engaged in the art of swordplay, specifically in the Tierce position and its accompanying Tierce-Thrust. The image, a beautiful copperplate engraving after an original illustration by Thomas Rowlandson, was published in Mr. Domenico Angelo's renowned fencing manual, "The School of Fencing," in London during 1787. The Tierce position, as demonstrated by the fencers in this print, is a classic fencing stance that allows for both defensive and offensive maneuvers. With their right foot forward and their weight evenly distributed, the fencers are poised to parry and thrust, their swords held in the Tierce guard, a defensive position where the blade is held horizontally in front of the body. The outside parry, or parade, is a defensive technique used to deflect an opponent's attack. The fencer in the foreground demonstrates this move, his sword angled to the outside of his opponent's blade, ready to redirect the force of the attack. The outside thrust, or Tierce-Thrust, is an offensive technique that follows the parry, with the fencer delivering a swift, powerful strike to the opponent's exposed side. The intricate details of the fencers' attire, from their tailored coats and breeches to their three-cornered hats, add to the refined and sophisticated air of the scene. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 18th-century fencing, a time when the art of the duel held great importance and skill in swordsmanship was highly prized.
