EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, drawn and engraved by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Méneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases two fascinating species from the ornithological world: the Great Jacamar (Jacamerops aureus) and the Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa). The Great Jacamar, with its vibrant golden-yellow plumage and distinctive elongated, curved beak, is a striking bird native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. The Northern Jacana, also known as the Common Jacana or the "lily pad bird," is a wading bird with distinctive long toes that allow it to walk on floating vegetation. In this image, the Great Jacamar perches on a branch, its beak slightly open as if in mid-call, while the Northern Jacana stands gracefully on a lily pad, its long toes spread wide for balance. The intricate details of the birds' plumage and the lush vegetation surrounding them are beautifully rendered in the hand-coloring, making this engraving a true masterpiece of 19th-century natural history illustration.
