EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Head of the Guinea Turaco, scientifically known as Tauraco persa buffoni. The Guinea Turaco, also known as the Olive Bushshrike or the Large Grey-headed Bushshrike, is a native bird species to West Africa. The illustration was created by the renowned English naturalist and illustrator, William John Swainson, for Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, published in Edinburgh by William Lizars in 1837. The Guinea Turaco is a medium-sized bird, with an olive-green body, a large, grey head, and a distinctive red eye. The beak is short, curved, and black. This species is a member of the Musophagidae family, which also includes the Knob-billed Duplex and the Malachite Kingfisher. The Guinea Turaco is found in the forests and woodlands of West Africa, from Senegal in the west to Uganda in the east, and as far south as Angola. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, and insects. They are also known to be social birds, living in groups of up to 20 individuals. This beautiful engraving captures the intricate details of the Guinea Turaco's features, from the texture of its feathers to the coloration of its eyes. The hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art. Swainson's illustration remains an accurate representation of the Guinea Turaco, providing a valuable record of this fascinating bird species for future generations.
