Herbert Kcmg Lieutenant General Watts

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Edward Watts (1858-1934) in the height of his military career during World War I. Born on February 23, 1858, Watts began his military service in the Royal Artillery in 1875. He rose through the ranks with distinction, serving in various campaigns including the Second Anglo-Afghan War, the Sudan Campaign, and the Boer War. By 1914, Watts had reached the rank of Major-General and was appointed to command the 1st Division Artillery. When World War I broke out, he led his troops with great success in the Battle of the Marne and the First Battle of Ypres. In 1915, he was promoted to Lieutenant-General and given command of the X Corps. This photograph was taken in 1917, during a lull in the fighting on the Western Front. Watts is shown in full uniform, with his stern yet focused expression conveying the gravity of his responsibilities as a commander. The decorations on his chest attest to his long and distinguished military career, including the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) and the Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG). Despite his advanced age, Watts continued to serve in the military until his retirement in 1920. He passed away on March 2, 1934, at the age of 76. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and dedication of the military leaders who played a crucial role in the outcome of World War I.
