EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Himalayan Aucuba, or Aucuba himalaica, also known as Aokiba in Nepal. The plant is native to the Himalayas and other mountain ranges in Asia, growing at elevations between 1500 and 3000 meters. The lush foliage of the Himalayan Aucuba is evergreen, with glossy, oval leaves that are a deep green color with a distinctive white midrib. The plant is most notable for its attractive berries, which are a bright red color when ripe and are often arranged in clusters. The berries are an important food source for birds and other wildlife in the Himalayan region. The Himalayan Aucuba is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and hothouses around the world, valued for its attractive foliage and striking berries. This beautiful image is from the renowned botanical work "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe," published in Ghent, Belgium, in 1857 by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires. The work was a comprehensive record of the plants grown in European gardens and hothouses at the time, and is considered a seminal work in the history of botanical illustration. The handcolouring on this lithograph adds to its artistic and scientific value, making it a prized addition to any botanical collection.
