EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, we find a regal and imposing portrait of Holy Roman Emperor Lambert I (880-898), also known as Lambert I, King of Italy or Lambert I of Friuli. The image, taken from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy" or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697, showcases the emperor in the grandeur of his imperial attire, adorned with a crown and a cloak lined with ermine fur. Lambert I, a member of the Carolingian dynasty, was the Duke of Friuli from 850 until his election as King of Italy in 881. He was the son of Boso, Count of Vintimille, and Gerberga, a daughter of Emperor Louis II. In 887, he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope John VIII, marking the beginning of the Saxon-Ottonian dynasty. The emperor's expression in the engraving conveys a sense of wisdom, determination, and authority. He is depicted holding a scepter in his right hand, symbolizing his royal power, and a token or coin in his left hand, representing his imperial authority. The background of the image features classical elements, such as columns and a triumphal arch, emphasizing the imperial and Caesar-like qualities of the emperor. Lambert I's reign was marked by military campaigns against the Magyars and the Saracens, as well as political maneuvering to secure his position within the Frankish Empire. Despite his short reign, he left a lasting impact on the history of the Holy Roman Empire and Italy. This magnificent copperplate engraving serves as a testament to his imperial majesty and the enduring legacy of the Roman monarchy.
