EDITORS COMMENTS
Holy Roman Emperor Lothair II, also known as Lotharius II or Lothair of Supplinburg, is depicted in this stunning 17th-century copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy" or "The Roman Monarchy." Lothair II (1075-1137) was the Duke of Saxony and the King of Germany, holding the title of Holy Roman Emperor from 1125 until his death. Born in the House of Supplinburg, Lothair II succeeded his father, Henry V, as Duke of Saxony in 1086. In 1125, he was elected King of the Romans, the first step towards the imperial title, following the death of Emperor Henry V. His election was confirmed by Pope Calixtus II, who crowned him Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in 1126. Lothair II's reign was marked by conflicts with his cousin, Conrad III (Conradus Ducis Sueviae, Duke of Swabia), who challenged his claim to the imperial throne. Despite these challenges, Lothair II managed to maintain his power and rule effectively, issuing coins bearing his image as a symbol of his authority. This classical portrait of Lothair II, inspired by the images of ancient Roman Caesars and Germanic Kaisers, showcases the emperor's regal presence and authority. The engraving, produced by the renowned engraver Abraham Bogaerts, is a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the 17th century. The image of Lothair II serves as a reminder of the complex political landscape of the Holy Roman Empire during this period and the enduring influence of classical art on European culture.
