EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris in 1849, showcases two intriguing bird species: the Hoopoe (Upupa epops) and the Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla). The Hoopoe, with its distinctive crest of feathers, is a familiar sight in open country across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Its long, downward-curved beak is an adaptation for probing the ground in search of insects, which make up the majority of its diet. The bird's plumage is predominantly brown with black and white stripes on its belly, making it well-camouflaged against the forest floor. The Eurasian Wryneck, on the other hand, is a small, elusive ground-dwelling bird with an unusual behavior. It is characterized by its distinctive neck, which it can twist almost 180 degrees, enabling it to mimic the sound of a serpent or a rattlesnake, which it uses to lure its prey. The bird's plumage is brown with black and white stripes on its back and a white belly. Both birds are depicted in their natural habitat, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the European continent during the mid-19th century. The intricate details of their feathers, beaks, and other features are beautifully captured in this exquisite hand-colored engraving, making it a valuable addition to any ornithological collection.
