EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a pair of Horned Grebes, Podiceps auritus, in their winter plumage. The male, with distinctive white plumes on his head and a black and white body, stands proudly on a rock in the foreground. The female, with her brownish-gray body and white underparts, swims gracefully in the water behind him. The intricate details of their feathers and the rippling water are beautifully captured in this ornithological illustration. The Horned Grebe is a bird native to North America, and is named for the tufts of feathers on the males' heads, which resemble horns. They are excellent swimmers and divers, and feed primarily on fish and other aquatic prey. This illustration is a chromolithograph after an original work by the renowned American ornithologist John James Audubon. It was published in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania in 1890 by E.K. Mayers in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The 19th century was a time of great interest in the natural world, and ornithology in particular, and Audubon's meticulous observations and illustrations were groundbreaking in the field. The Belted Kingfisher, Megaceryle alcyon, can also be seen in the background of the image, perched on a branch overlooking the water. The Kingfisher is another bird known for its distinctive plumage and hunting skills, and is a common sight near bodies of water in North America.
