EDITORS COMMENTS
Hylas, a beloved attendant of the legendary hero Hercules, was known for his exceptional beauty and purity. One day, as he was gathering water from the spring of Pegae near Lake Askanios in Mysia, Hylas was kidnapped by the irresistible charms of the Naiads Euneica, Malis, and Nycheia. These enchanting water nymphs, who dwelt in the spring, were captivated by Hylas's radiant presence and could not resist abducting him to make him their own. The scene depicted in this exquisite copperplate engraving by Tommaso Piroli, from his Antiquities of Herculaneum, captures the moment of Hylas's abduction. The naiads, represented as elegant and graceful figures, are shown playfully leading Hylas away, while he struggles to resist their allure. The serene waters of the spring reflect the tranquility of the scene, with the lush vegetation and the backdrop of the ancient ruins adding to the sense of timeless beauty. This engraving, created in Rome in 1790, is a testament to the enduring appeal of classical mythology and the artistry of the Neoclassical period. The intricate details of the figures and the natural elements are rendered with remarkable precision, making this a stunning work of art that continues to captivate viewers even today. The urn or vase in the foreground adds an authentic touch to the scene, further emphasizing the antiquity and historical significance of the subject matter.
