EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases two captivating avian species native to India: the Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) and the Parrotfinch (Erythrura species). The Indian Peafowl, also known as the Blue Peafowl, is the national bird of India and is renowned for its striking plumage, particularly the male's iridescent green and gold train. The bird is depicted in the foreground, its regal posture and piercing gaze conveying a sense of pride and majesty. The Indian Peafowl is an omnivorous bird, feeding on a variety of fruits, seeds, and insects. In the background, a group of Parrotfinches can be seen perched on branches. Parrotfinches belong to the Estrildid finch family, and are characterized by their vibrant plumage and distinctive parrot-like beaks. The Parrotfinch's diet consists mainly of seeds, fruits, and insects. The intricate details of the birds' plumage, the lush foliage, and the naturalistic setting are all testament to the exceptional artistry of the illustrator and engraver. This beautiful work of art is a testament to the rich natural heritage of India and the meticulous craftsmanship of the 19th century ornithological illustrators.
