EDITORS COMMENTS
This intricately hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jean-Gabriel Pretre and published in Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans in 1825, showcases three distinct cobra species native to India, Peru, and Brazil. The Indian cobra (Naja naja), depicted in the center, is the most common venomous snake in India and is easily identified by its distinctive hooded head and distinctive banded pattern. To the left, the Peruvian cobra (Naja tripudians), also known as the rainbow cobra, is shown. This snake is native to South America and is characterized by its vibrant, rainbow-colored bands and triangular head. The Peruvian cobra is a relatively small species, reaching only about 1 meter in length. On the right, the Brazilian cobra (Naja brasiliensis), also known as the Brazilian rainbow boa or the Brazilian rainbow snake, is depicted. Despite its name, this snake is actually a cobra, not a boa. It is native to Central and South America and is known for its beautiful, iridescent scales that shimmer in various shades of green, blue, and purple. This stunning illustration provides a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating snakes, which were studied and documented by naturalists of the time. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the engraving serve to highlight the unique beauty and diversity of these reptiles, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical natural history prints.
