EDITORS COMMENTS
Jean de Luxembourg, Le Batard de Hautbourdin (Jean, the Bastard of Hautbourdin), was a prominent figure in the 15th century European nobility. Born around 1400, he was the illegitimate son of Pierre I, Count of Luxembourg, and his mistress, Marguerite de Hautbourdin. Despite his bastard status, Jean rose to prominence through his military prowess and political acumen. This stunning chromolithograph from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century, depicts Jean de Luxembourg in full armor, complete with a distinctive crest featuring a dragon. The image is taken from an illustrated manuscript in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal, Paris, numbered 4790. Jean de Luxembourg was a member of the prestigious Order of the Golden Fleece, an exclusive chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The Order brought together the most powerful European nobility and was a symbol of unity and prestige. Jean's inclusion in the Order further solidified his status as a prominent figure in European politics. Throughout his life, Jean de Luxembourg held various important positions, including the role of Chamberlain to the Duke of Burgundy and the governorship of several territories. He was also a skilled military commander, leading troops in various battles and campaigns. Despite his successes, Jean's life was not without controversy. In 1442, he was involved in a dispute with the Duke of Brittany over the governorship of Guines, leading to a brief war. However, he was eventually reconciled with the Duke and remained a loyal servant of the Burgundian court until his death in 1466. This beautiful chromolithograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Jean de Luxembourg, Le Batard de Hautbourdin, a bastard son who rose to become a prominent figure in European nobility and politics.
