EDITORS COMMENTS
This oval portrait depicts John Gregory (circa 1724-1773), a renowned Scottish physician, medical writer, and moralist of the 18th century. Born in Perth, Scotland, Gregory studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and later became a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). He is best known for his influential works in both medicine and morality. In the medical field, Gregory is celebrated for his textbook "A Treatise on the Folks Diseases," which was first published in 1761 and went through numerous editions. This comprehensive work covered various aspects of general practice and was widely used by physicians during the 18th and 19th centuries. As a moralist, Gregory's most famous work is "A Father's Legacy to His Son," first published in 1774, a year after his death. This book, which was intended as a guide for parents in the education and upbringing of their children, became a bestseller and was translated into multiple languages. Gregory's influence extended beyond Scotland, and his works were widely read and admired throughout Europe. In this portrait, the distinguished physician is depicted with a serious expression, reflecting the gravity of his work and the importance of his role in shaping the medical and moral discourse of his time. The intricately detailed clothing and the elegant oval format further emphasize the sitter's status and significance within Scottish society during the 1760s.
