EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the innovative musical instrument known as the John Isaac Hawkins Claviole or Finger-Keyed Viol, depicted as an upright piano. The intricate illustration, created by J. Farey and meticulously engraved by Wilson Lowry, is taken from Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature published in London in 1816 by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown. John Isaac Hawkins (1772-1835) was a renowned English instrument maker, who is best known for his invention of the Claviole, a forerunner to the modern piano. This unique instrument, which combined elements of the harpsichord and the piano, featured a horizontal keyboard with wooden keys that were played with the fingers, rather than the traditional hammer mechanism of the piano. The Claviole was an intriguing alternative to the traditional pianoforte, offering a softer, more mellow sound. Its design, with its vertical case and decorative ornamentation, was also visually striking and distinct from the more utilitarian appearance of the pianoforte. This exquisite copperplate engraving offers a glimpse into the rich musical history of the early 19th century, providing a fascinating insight into the evolution of the piano and the inventive spirit of its makers. The intricate details of the instrument, from the delicate keys to the ornate casing, are beautifully rendered, making this a must-have for any collection focused on musical instruments, history, or the arts.
