This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving is a beautiful representation of Josephinia imperatricis, also known as Josephine's Crown or Gioseffinia coronata. The plant is depicted in all its glory, with its large, edible fruit surrounded by delicate, veined leaves. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the true essence of the plants he depicted. Josephinia imperatricis is a rare and fascinating plant, native to Central and South America. Its large, pome-like fruit, which resembles a crown, is edible and was highly prized by the indigenous peoples of the region. The plant is no longer in existence today, having gone extinct. The illustration also includes several other plants in the same family, such as Asaphus caudigerus, Agnostus pisiformis, Ogygia di Guettard, and Agnosto pisiforme. These plants, along with Josephinia imperatricis, were likely included in the Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali to showcase the diversity of the plant kingdom during the 19th century. This stunning illustration is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of the natural world, and a reminder of the importance of preserving and documenting the natural world for future generations.
