1. Title: "A Dazzling Display of Avian Diversity: Kalij Pheasant and Hoatzin" This handcoloured lithograph showcases two intriguing bird species, the Kalij Pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) and the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), from the Complete Works of Buffon by Th. Lejeune, published in Brussels in 1837. The Kalij Pheasant, also known as the Himalayan Monal, is a stunning bird native to the Eastern Himalayas and the hills of Nepal. With its iridescent green and blue plumage, bold black and white markings, and distinctive crest, it is a sight to behold. The male Kalij Pheasant, depicted on the left, is shown in all its resplendent glory, displaying its magnificent feathers to attract a mate. On the right, the Hoatzin, or Canje Pheasant, presents a striking contrast with its unusual appearance. Native to the Amazon Basin, this bird is often referred to as the "stinkbird" due to its distinctive odour, which is produced by the fermentation of the food in its digestive system. The Hoatzin's appearance is equally unique, with its red wattles, blue-grey feathers, and distinctive crest. The Hoatzin, shown here in its juvenile form, is an interesting bird that defies typical avian classifications. It is the only bird species that possesses claws on its wings, and its chicks hatch with a downy covering that resembles a duckling's. This lithograph serves as a testament to the incredible diversity of the avian world and the meticulous detail of 19th-century ornithological illustrations.
