EDITORS COMMENTS
King Louis Philippe I of France (1773-1850) was the last King of the House of Bourbon-Orléans and the seventh and penultimate King of the French Monarchy. He reigned from August 9, 1830, until his abdication on February 24, 1848. This handcoloured lithograph, created by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, for his work "Costumes Historiques de la France" published in 1852 by Administration de Librairie in Paris, offers a striking representation of King Louis Philippe I in his regal attire. The image captures the monarch in a three-quarter view, dressed in the traditional robes and headdress of the French monarchy. He is depicted wearing a long, red velvet robe, adorned with gold braid and ermine trim, and a white linen shirt with a lace jabot. The King's headdress, the "diademe," is a golden band encrusted with precious stones and pearls. The image also shows the King's scepter and orb, symbols of his royal authority. Louis Philippe I ascended to the throne following the July Revolution of 1830, which resulted in the abdication of King Charles X. Known for his liberal policies and commitment to modernizing France, Louis Philippe I ruled during a period of relative peace and prosperity. However, his reign was marked by growing social and political unrest, culminating in the Revolution of 1848 and his eventual abdication. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph serves as a testament to the grandeur and majesty of the French monarchy during the 19th century and offers a glimpse into the opulence and elegance of the royal court.
