EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Fournier for Charles d'Orbigny's "Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle" (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases three fascinating and distinctly different mammals: the Kinkajou (Potos flavus), the European Otter (Lutra lutra), and the Caudivolvulus, also known as the Long-tailed Weasel or Mustela cauda-volvulus. The Kinkajou, a native of Central and South America, is depicted in an upright position, clinging to a tree branch with its prehensile tail wrapped around it. Known for their long, bushy tails and large, expressive eyes, Kinkajous are omnivorous and nocturnal creatures. They are also notable for their ability to produce a sweet, milky substance from their elbows, which is used as a defense mechanism against predators and as a food source for their young. The European Otter, on the other hand, is a semi-aquatic mammal native to Europe, Russia, and Asia. In this illustration, the otter is shown swimming in the water, its sleek, streamlined body perfectly adapted for life in and around water. European Otters are omnivorous, feeding on fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and plants. They are also known for their distinctive, weasel-like faces and their ability to use their tails as rudders while swimming. The third animal in this intricately detailed engraving is the Long-tailed Weasel, or Caudivolvulus. This small, agile weasel is shown in a defensive posture, its body arched and its teeth bared. Long-tailed Weasels are carnivorous, feeding primarily on rodents, but they will also eat birds, amphibians, and reptiles. They are known for their long, slender bodies and their ability to kill prey much larger than themselves. This stunning handcolored engraving not only showcases the beauty and diversity of these three unique mammals, but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century.
