EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a lady of the 16th century, attending a grand ball during the reign of King Henry III of France, between the years 1573 and 1575. The lady's attire is a perfect representation of the opulence and elegance of the French court during this period. She wears a full-face black mask, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to her appearance. Her hat is adorned with pearls, a symbol of wealth and status, while her dress is made of black velvet brocade, accentuated by a corset and a voluminous farthingale. The high lace collar, shoulder pads, and slashed sleeves are all typical elements of the fashion of the time. The lady's accessories complete her extravagant look. From her chain belt hangs a purse and a mirror, both embellished with feathers. Her hands are hidden in an embroidered muff, keeping them warm and protected. The print is a hand-colored copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, based on an illustration by Louis Marie Lante from the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres, published in Paris in 1827. The intricate details of the lady's costume and the rich colors of the print transport us back to the opulent world of the French court in the 16th century.
