EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, entitled "Lesser White Cabbage Butterfly, Pieris rapae, Bastard Wasp and Fruit Flies on a Flower," is taken from the second edition of "Naauwkeurige Waarneemingen omtrent de veranderingen van veele Insekten" (Accurate Descriptions of the Metamorphoses of Insects), published by J. Sluyter in Amsterdam in 1774. The work was originally illustrated with 25 plates, but for this edition, additional eight plates were added. This particular plate was drawn and etched by the skilled hand of Jacob L. Admiral. The image showcases a Lesser White Cabbage Butterfly (Pieris rapae) perched gracefully on a flower, its wings adorned with intricate patterns of black, white, and yellow. The butterfly's caterpillar, or larva, can be seen in the lower left corner of the plate, munching on a cabbage leaf. A Bastard Wasp (Parasitica wasp) is depicted in the upper right corner, poised to lay its eggs inside the butterfly's pupa, or chrysalis, which is shown in the upper left corner. Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are also present, buzzing around the flower and potentially serving as a food source for the wasp's larvae. The intricacy and precision of the engraving are truly remarkable, with each element - from the veins on the butterfly's wings to the tiny hairs on the caterpillar's body - rendered in meticulous detail. The use of hand-coloring further enhances the beauty and vibrancy of the image, making it a stunning example of 18th-century natural history illustration.
