EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Long-crested Northern Cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis carneus, also known as the Crested Cardinal or the Dominican Comitre. The image was produced in 1776 as part of Peter Brown's New Illustrations of Zoology, published by B. White in London. The Long-crested Northern Cardinal is a vibrant and distinctive bird native to the Americas, specifically in the eastern United States and parts of Central America. The male cardinal is easily identified by its bright red plumage, contrasting black facial mask, and the distinctive long, pointed crest on its head. The female, while less colorful, shares similar features but with a more subdued color palette. This particular specimen was reportedly obtained from Para, Brazil, during the late 18th century. Marmaduke Tunstall, a naturalist or collector, is noted as the possessor of this bird. The meticulous detail in the engraving, with its lifelike representation of the bird's feathers and anatomical features, is a testament to the skill and artistry of the time. This image is an essential contribution to the early history of ornithology, providing a window into the natural world of the past and showcasing the beauty and diversity of the Long-crested Northern Cardinal.
