EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heartwarming image captured during War Weapons Week in 1941, fourteen-year-old Mabel Knibbs of Windsor proudly displays her new navy blue handbag, a generous gift from Her Majesty the Queen. The young girl, a dedicated member of the Windsor Youth Club detachment, was parading with her fellow members when tragedy struck - her handbag fell to the ground, and before she could react, a car ran over it. The shocking incident took place in the presence of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, who were watching the parade. Moved by the young girl's misfortune, the Queen took notice and sent Mabel a brand-new handbag as a replacement. This gesture of kindness and generosity during wartime served as a reminder of the compassion and support that continued to unite the British people amidst the challenges of the Second World War.
