Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, Indian ruler

Bhupinder Singh (1891-1938), ruling Maharaja of the state of Patiala from 1900 to 1938. He is perhaps the most famous Maharaja of Patiala, best known for his extravagance, and for being a cricketer. He served on the General Staff in France, Belgium, Italy and Palestine during the First World War as an Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel, and was promoted Honorary Major-General in 1918 and Honorary Lieutenant-General in 1931. He represented India at the League of Nations in 1925, and was chancellor of the Indian Chamber of Princes for 10 years between 1926 and 1938, also being a representative at the Round Table Conference. He married ten times, and had 88 children by his wives and concubines. Date: circa 1913-1914

Bhupinder Singh reigned as Maharaja of Patiala from 1900 to 1938, earning a reputation for his grandeur and love for cricket. He is depicted here wearing an ornate turban, a symbol of his royal status, during the 1910s. Bhupinder Singh's life was marked by significant achievements beyond his royal duties. He served as an Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel in the British Army during World War I, fighting in France, Belgium, Italy, and Palestine. His exceptional service was recognized with promotions to Honorary Major-General in 1918 and Honorary Lieutenant-General in 1931. As a representative of India, Bhupinder Singh attended the League of Nations in 1925 and served as the chancellor of the Indian Chamber of Princes for ten years between 1926 and 1938. He was also a delegate at the Round Table Conference. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh's personal life was equally noteworthy. He married ten times and had 88 children from his wives and concubines.
