EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing and satirical hand-coloured copperplate engraving, titled "Symptoms of Restiveness," by Thomas Rowlandson, we witness a man in a formal waistcoat and trousers, determinedly beating a stubborn horse with a cudgel. The horse, with its wide-open eyes and tensed muscles, appears resolute in its refusal to be tamed. The scene takes place in front of a sign that reads, "Neat chaises and saddle horses to let by the Widow Carzy." The widow herself, dressed in black and waving a broom, stands nearby, her expression a mixture of exasperation and amusement. The chaotic background of the scene is filled with the trappings of a dinner party gone awry. A game table is overturned, a dish of hare or haunch of venison lies rotten on the ground, and the pungent smell of stench fills the air. The man's dinner guests, all present at the scene, retch in disgust at the sight of the man's struggle with the horse. This illustration, designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson to accompany Reverend James Beresford's "Miseries of Human Life," published by Ackermann in 1808, is a satirical commentary on the human condition. The man's inability to tame the horse represents the struggles and frustrations of life, while the guests' reaction to the scene highlights the absurdity and futility of such struggles. The image is a poignant reminder of the unexpected challenges and obstacles that life can present, and the importance of maintaining a sense of humor in the face of adversity.
