EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite marble statue depicts the legendary moment when the god of love, Cupid, kisses Psyche for the first time. The scene is taken from the ancient Roman mythology tale of Psyche and Cupid, where Psyche, a mortal woman, is chosen by Cupid to be his bride. However, due to the interference of Cupid's jealous sister, Psyche is left at the altar on their wedding night, believing her groom to be dead. In her despair, Psyche lights a candle to mourn her lost love, inadvertently revealing herself to Cupid. Moved by her devotion, Cupid forgives Psyche and grants her immortality. This beautiful sculpture, which is currently housed in the Capitol Museum in Rome, was captured in a copperplate engraving by R.H. Cromck from a drawing by H. Howard. The engraving, published in Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia in London in 1818, offers a detailed and intricate representation of the statue's intricate details and textures. The delicate folds of Psyche's robe, the tenderness of Cupid's touch, and the ethereal quality of the scene are all expertly rendered in this image. The myth of Cupid and Psyche has been a popular subject in art and literature for centuries, and this statue is a testament to the enduring power of the story. The image of the god of love tenderly kissing his mortal bride continues to inspire awe and wonder, and serves as a reminder of the transformative power of love.
