EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts Marguerite de Comminges, the brave and enigmatic wife of Mathieu de Foix, a nobleman from the Foix region in southern France during the late Middle Aages. The image, created by Leopold Massard after a miniature in Bernard de Montfaucon's collection, captures the essence of Marguerite's strength and resilience. Born in 1363, Marguerite was the daughter of Roger Bernard III, Count of Comminges. Her marriage to Mathieu de Foix, who was much older than her, was arranged for political reasons. However, their relationship was far from harmonious. According to historical records, Mathieu became increasingly jealous and paranoid, and in 1388, he had Marguerite imprisoned in a castle for an astonishing fifteen years. Despite her confinement, Marguerite refused to be broken. She continued to wear the finest clothes and jewels, and is said to have maintained her beauty and grace throughout her imprisonment. Her determination and spirit were an inspiration to those around her, and her story became a legend in the region. The lithograph shows Marguerite dressed in the fashion of the late 14th century, with a richly embroidered gown and a headdress adorned with pearls and feathers. Her expression is one of quiet strength and defiance, reflecting the indomitable spirit that made her a symbol of courage and resilience. This image, published in Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who defied the odds and refused to be defined by her circumstances. Marguerite de Comminges remains an enduring symbol of the human spirit and a testament to the power of determination and resilience.
