The image is filled with intriguing details, showcasing various versions of the quintain, a popular target used in chivalric tournaments during the 14th century. At the top, a boy skillfully rides a rolling trestle, his focus intently fixed on the fixed quintain ahead. Balancing precariously on his hobbyhorse, he thrusts his lance with determination, aiming for the swinging shields and the quintain's wooden head. The quintain, a tall, vertical target, is designed to test the rider's agility, timing, and accuracy. To the left, a soldier in full armour charges towards a pel quintain, a stationary target with a wooden head and a large, padded shield. The soldier's powerful thrust with his spear is captured mid-air, as he attempts to knock the shield off the quintain's head. The pel quintain was often used for training purposes, allowing knights and soldiers to hone their spear-fighting skills. On the right, an intriguing saracen quintain, or turk quintain, is depicted.
