EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and resolve of Jean Jacobs, a former London shop assistant, as she undergoes training to become a member of the Women's Land Army in Sussex during September 1939. With the outbreak of World War II, the Women's Land Army was formed to help maintain the country's agriculture and food production, as many men had been called away to fight. Jean, along with thousands of other women and girls, answered the call to service and left the city for rural life. In this image, she is seen proudly wearing her new uniform, complete with beret, jumper, and trousers. The practical clothing was designed to enable women to work long hours in all weathers, and was a stark contrast to the fashionable dresses and high heels that were the norm for women in the 1930s. The Women's Land Army played a vital role in the war effort, with members working on farms, in forests, and in other rural areas. They undertook a wide range of tasks, from ploughing and harvesting to milking cows and caring for pigs. Their contributions were invaluable, helping to ensure that the country was fed and that the war effort was not hindered by food shortages. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and adaptability of the women who served in the Women's Land Army during World War II. It also highlights the important role that women played in supporting the war effort and maintaining the country's infrastructure during a time of great upheaval and change.
