EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant memorial, located at number 15 in General Lotzstraat, Zuidschote, pays tribute to the brave members of the 2nd and 4th Carabiniers who served in the First World War. The Carabiniers, a Belgian cavalry regiment, played a significant role in the defense of Ypres and Ieper during the devastating April 1915 gas attacks. The horrific use of poison gas during this period marked a turning point in the war, as traditional tactics and weapons were rendered obsolete. The memorial, erected by the Carabiniers Old Comrades Association in 2016, acknowledges the regiment's valiant efforts during this dark chapter in world history. The 2nd and 4th Carabiniers bravely faced the unknown dangers of the gas attacks, putting their lives on the line to protect their fellow soldiers and the Belgian people. Their unwavering courage and determination are commemorated through this touching tribute. The First World War, also known as the Great War, saw the largest and most destructive conflict the world had ever experienced. The use of chemical weapons, such as chlorine gas, marked a new and terrifying phase in warfare. Despite the challenges and hardships, the soldiers of the Carabiniers regiment continued to fight valiantly, demonstrating the resilience and bravery of the Belgian people during this trying time. This memorial serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the 2nd and 4th Carabiniers and the countless other soldiers who fought in the First World War. Their legacy lives on, inspiring future generations to honor their memory and carry on the spirit of courage and determination that defined their service.
