EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, a memorial stands in tribute to Leslie Andrew VC, a brave New Zealander who earned the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest military decoration, at the age of 20 during the First World War. The memorial, located in Warneton, Belgium, commemorates Leslie's heroic actions at La Bassee on October 4, 1917, when he single-handedly captured an enemy machine gun post, saving numerous lives. Leslie went on to serve in the Second World War and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a Brigadier. He passed away in January 1969. Tragically, Leslie's VC medal, along with several other New Zealand military decorations, were stolen from the New Zealand Waiouru Museum on December 2, 2007. The loss of these medals sparked a significant response. Lord Ashcroft, a British businessman, and Tom Sturgess, an ex-US Marine, offered a reward of NZD 300,000 for their safe return. Their efforts paid off, as the medals were recovered in February 2008. The memorial was unveiled on October 26, 2008, in the presence of the New Zealand Ambassador to Belgium. The event marked the return of Leslie Andrew's VC and other stolen medals, which were restored to their rightful place in New Zealand military history. This memorial serves as a reminder of Leslie's bravery and sacrifice during the First World War, as well as the importance of preserving military history. This photograph captures the essence of the memorial, with its inscription reading, "In memory of Leslie Andrew VC, Warneton 1917-1969." The image also evokes the solemn atmosphere of the memorial site, surrounded by lush greenery and the quiet reflection of the nearby pond. The memorial stands as a testament to Leslie's legacy and the enduring impact of the First World War on the lives of soldiers and their families.
