EDITORS COMMENTS
Mlle. de Fontanges, also known as Marie Angélique Scorailles Roussille, was a French noblewoman who rose to prominence in the court of King Louis XIV as his mistress from 1661 to 1681. In this exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving, Mlle. de Fontanges is depicted in all her elegance and beauty. Her long, curly locks cascade over her shoulders, framing her delicate features and accentuating her youthful charm. She wears a fashionable blue mantua dress with a lace collar and sleeves, adorned with intricate pearls and a red brocade petticoat. A pearl choker encircles her neck, adding to her regal appearance. In her hand, she holds a fan, a necessary accessory for ladies of the court to keep cool during the hot French summers. Her gloves, also made of the finest materials, are elegantly folded on the table beside her. The engraving, created by Georges Jacques Gatine after an illustration by Louis Marie Lante, captures the essence of Mlle. de Fontanges' style and sophistication. Her image was originally published in the prestigious Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres in Paris in 1827. Mlle. de Fontanges' relationship with King Louis XIV was one of the most famous and scandalous of the Sun King's reign. Despite the disapproval of the queen and the court, the pair remained together for over two decades, and Mlle. de Fontanges played a significant role in the political and social life of the French court.
