EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts King Rajasinha II of Kandy, the last truly independent monarch of Sri Lanka, in the regal splendor of his court. The King, dressed in traditional Sinhalese attire, is shown seated on a throne adorned with intricate carvings and precious stones. His crown, a symbol of his divine right to rule, rests atop his head. In the foreground, a Tirinanxy or Chief Priest, dressed in his ceremonial robes and holding a ceremonial staff, pays homage to the King. Andrea Bernieri, an Italian artist, created this handcoloured copperplate drawing and engraving based on an original work by Robert Knox. The illustration is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy, in 1844. King Rajasinha II ruled from 1635 to 1687, a period of relative peace and prosperity for the Kingdom of Kandy. He was known for his patronage of Buddhism and his efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations with European powers. This image provides a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka during the late 1600s, showcasing the grandeur of the Kandyan court and the deep reverence for the monarchy and the religious leaders of the time.
