EDITORS COMMENTS
Noble Rhubarb or Sikkim Rhubarb, Rheum nobile, is a rare and beautiful rhubarb species native to the Himalayas, specifically in Sikkim, India. This exquisite plant is depicted in this handcoloured lithograph, which is a copy of a sketch by the renowned botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker. The illustration is taken from the highly regarded horticultural publication "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe" by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires, published in Ghent, Belgium in 1857. Rheum nobile is characterized by its large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that can grow up to 1 meter long, and its elegant, spiky inflorescences that rise above the foliage. The plant produces small, red flowers that bloom in late spring or early summer. Noble rhubarb is highly valued for its ornamental qualities and is a popular addition to exotic gardens and hothouses. The discovery of Noble rhubarb in Sikkim was a significant event in the history of botanical exploration. Hooker, who was a close friend and collaborator of Charles Darwin, was instrumental in the collection and documentation of this rare plant. His meticulous sketches and descriptions provided invaluable information for the scientific community and helped to advance our understanding of the natural world. This stunning illustration showcases the beauty and rarity of Noble rhubarb, and serves as a reminder of the important role that botanical exploration and documentation played in the development of horticulture and science during the 19th century.
