EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Oudart for Charles d'Orbigny's Universal Dictionary of Natural History published in Paris in 1849, showcases two intriguing amphibian species: the Paradoxical Frog (Pseudis paradoxa, depicted in the foreground) and the Black-spotted Casque-headed Tree Frog (Trachycephalus nigromaculatus, in the background). The Paradoxical Frog, also known as the Meriane Frog, is native to South America and is renowned for its unique physical characteristics. With its elongated snout, large eyes, and webbed feet, it is well-adapted to a life in and around water. However, its most striking feature is its ability to change color, from a bright yellow to a dark brown, depending on its surroundings and mood. This adaptation helps the frog blend in and avoid predators. The Black-spotted Casque-headed Tree Frog, on the other hand, is a native of Central and South America. As its name suggests, it has a distinctive casque-like head, which is believed to serve as a protective structure against predators. Its body is covered in small black spots, and its legs are long and powerful, allowing it to leap great distances between trees. Both species are important components of their respective ecosystems and are of great interest to herpetologists and naturalists. This beautiful engraving not only showcases their unique appearances but also serves as a testament to the rich biodiversity of the natural world during the 19th century.
