EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from 1863, the French population of Rio de Janeiro gathers on board the warship Astree to sing the Te Deum hymn in celebration of the military victory in the second siege of Puebla, Mexico. The French intervention in Mexico, which began in 1861, was an attempt to support the Mexican Republican government against the forces of Emperor Maximilian I. The second siege of Puebla, a key battle in the conflict, took place from January 16 to 17, 1863, and resulted in a surprise victory for the Mexican forces, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. Despite this setback, the French continued their campaign, eventually capturing Mexico City in 1863 and installing Maximilian as emperor. The Te Deum hymn, a traditional Latin hymn of praise to God for victory in battle, was a popular way for people to express their gratitude and faith during times of military triumph. In this instance, the French community in Rio de Janeiro, far from the battlefield but deeply connected to the ongoing conflict, came together on the Astree to sing the hymn and offer their thanks for the recent victory. The image captures a moment of unity and solidarity, as people from all walks of life come together to express their collective joy and relief. The Te Deum event on the Astree was a significant moment in the French intervention in Mexico, and this photograph offers a rare glimpse into the emotions and experiences of those involved. It is a poignant reminder of the complex and far-reaching impact of military conflicts on communities and individuals, and the power of faith and community to provide solace and strength in times of adversity.
