EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Scenes in America," is an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the indigenous peoples of Northwest Canada, as depicted in Rev. Isaac Taylor's educational book published in London in 1821. The image showcases three distinct scenes from the region. In the foreground, a group of Tlicho or Dogrib people are gathered in front of their huts, dressed in traditional clothing. The women wear long, flowing robes made of animal hides, while the men don fringed shirts and leggings. The children play and explore their surroundings, protected by their elders. Moving to the left, we see an interior view of an underground Aleut house in Unalaska. The Aleuts, indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands, lived in these subterranean dwellings to protect themselves from the harsh climate. The fire, started using native methods, provides warmth and light, while a buffalo hide hangs on the wall, a testament to their hunting skills. The third scene takes us to the banks of a river, where we find Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, famous explorers of the Pacific Ocean, escaping a deluge. They are shown huddled together, seeking shelter under a tree, as the river rises around them. This scene underscores the challenges and dangers faced by early American travelers in the Northwest. This image offers a unique window into the history and culture of the Northwest Canadian peoples, providing both amusement and instruction for young readers of the time.
