EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-coloured copperplate engraving depicts two beautiful members of the Phacelia genus: Phacelia menziesii and Phacelia linearis, also known as Menzies eutoca and Eutoca menziesii. The engraving, created by Frederick W. Smith after J. T. Hart, was published in John Lindley and Robert Sweet's Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery in 1854 by G. Willis in London. Phacelia menziesii, also known as Menzies eutoca, is a native plant of western North America, particularly California. It is characterized by its tall spikes of vibrant blue or purple flowers, which bloom in the late spring. The plant's name honors the Scottish botanist Archibald Menzies, who first collected the plant in 1794. Phacelia linearis, also known as Eutoca menziesii, is another native North American species, found in the western United States and Mexico. It is distinguished by its narrow, linear leaves and its dense, spike-like inflorescences of small, white or pink flowers. The plant's common name, "Tidy Tips," reflects its neat and orderly appearance. Both Phacelia menziesii and Phacelia linearis are valued for their ornamental qualities, and they have been used in horticulture for over a century. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this hand-coloured copperplate engraving capture the beauty and elegance of these two charming Phacelia species, providing a window into the botanical world of the mid-19th century.
