EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the facade of the Nags Head pub in Merton, London, as it looked in the 1930s. The image, taken in 1938, shows the classic design of the public house with its distinctive sign and red brick exterior. The Nags Head was a popular local watering hole, having been in operation since at least 1929, as evidenced by the trading record detailed on the reverse of the print. The pub, which was located at 14-16 London Road, SW19 3BJ, was a long-standing institution in the Merton community. However, unfortunately, it was demolished around the year 2000, making way for a small block of flats. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the history and character of the pub that once stood there. The Nags Head was not part of the Charrington and Company Limited chain, despite the common misconception. Charrington's was a large brewing and pub company that operated in London and the South East of England during the 19th and 20th centuries. This photograph provides a glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse of the rich history and heritage of the pubs and public houses of Merton and London during the 1930s.
