EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the iconic Pagoda pub, located in the vibrant and historic area of Bermondsey, London. The image, taken from an angle, reveals the intricate details of the pub's facade, with its distinctive red brick exterior and ornate pagoda-style roof. The Pagoda, which was once a popular local watering hole, has a rich history that can be traced back to 1934, as evidenced by the trading record detailed on the reverse side of this print. Over the years, the pub has undergone various transformations. In 1961, it was known as the Pagoda, and was operated under Hoare & Company Limited. In September 2013, the Caribbean restaurant, O.Tower, moved in from two doors down, bringing a new energy to the area. However, the pub closed its doors in May 2014, and a tragic fire occurred on June 19, 2014. Despite these challenges, the Pagoda was given a new lease on life following a successful planning application to convert the upper floors into a hotel while retaining the pub on the ground floor. As of July 2018, the pub was being offered for lease on a free of tie basis, providing an opportunity for a new owner to write the next chapter in the Pagoda's storied history. This photograph is a testament to the enduring character of Bermondsey's pub scene and the resilience of the community that continues to support it. Whether you're a local or a visitor, the Pagoda remains an essential part of the area's rich tapestry, and a must-see destination for anyone exploring the vibrant streets of Bermondsey.
