EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the interior of the Queen Victoria Public House in Tooting, London, as it once looked in the mid-20th century. The image, taken some time between 1934 and 1961, reveals a cozy and inviting bar space filled with patrons engaged in lively conversation and enjoying their drinks. The historic pub, located at 170-172 Mitcham Road, SW17 0QY, was a cherished local institution with a rich history that dates back to at least the late 19th century. The Queen Victoria PH, also known as the "Little House," was a popular watering hole for the community in Tooting. The pub's walls were adorned with an impressive collection of historic fittings, including ornate mirrors, intricate woodwork, and beautiful tiled surfaces. These features bore testament to the pub's long and storied past. Unfortunately, by July 2018, the Queen Victoria PH had closed its doors, and its historic interior was stripped of its treasured fittings. The pub's application for a spot listing with English Heritage had been submitted, but the organization failed to respond in a timely manner. As a result, the pub's historic features were lost forever, leaving only memories and photographs like this one to remind us of its former glory. The Queen Victoria PH remains a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving our historic buildings and the stories they hold.
