EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the quaint and historic facade of the Shipwrights Arms pub in Brighton, Sussex, as it stood before its unfortunate demise in 1962. Located in the heart of Southwick, this beloved local watering hole was a cherished part of the community, with its distinctive red-brick exterior and inviting sign welcoming patrons for over a century. The Shipwrights Arms, a popular destination for locals and travelers alike, was more than just a pub. It was a place where stories were shared, friendships were forged, and memories were made. The building, which dates back to the late 1800s, was a testament to the rich history of Brighton and its connection to the sea. Sadly, in the name of progress, the pub was demolished during the redevelopment of Southwick in the 1960s. The area underwent a major transformation, resulting in the loss of many historic properties and the construction of a new shopping center. The Shipwrights Arms, along with its unique character and history, was a casualty of this change. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, a time when community pubs were the heart and soul of the neighborhood. Today, the site where the Shipwrights Arms once stood is a reminder of the past, a testament to the importance of preserving history and the memories that make our communities unique.
