EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving showcases three distinctive breeds of the common pigeon (Columba livia): the Cravatte Francais, Nonain Capucin, and Trembleur Paon. The image is taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The engraving was created by Adolph Fries and further refined by the skilled hand of du Casse. The Cravatte Francais, or French Cravat, is a domestic pigeon breed named for the frilled collar, or cravat, that adorns its neck. This elegant feature is created by the extension of the feathers, which is achieved by selective breeding. The Cravatte Francais is known for its graceful appearance and was a popular breed among European nobility. The Nonain Capucin, or Capuchin Pigeon, is another domestic breed, characterized by its monk-like appearance. The capuchin monk's hood-like head covering is formed by the feathers on its head, which are arranged in a distinctive manner. This breed was also favored by the nobility for its unique appearance. The Trembleur Paon, or Trembling Peacock Pigeon, is a wild breed native to Europe and Asia. Its name comes from the quivering or trembling effect produced by the iridescent green and blue feathers on its neck and back. This pigeon is known for its striking appearance and is a favorite among bird enthusiasts and collectors. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the artistry of the 19th century and provides a glimpse into the world of ornithology and zoology during that era. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors used in the hand-coloring process bring these birds to life, making this an essential addition to any collection of natural history prints.
