EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases an intriguing assembly of six different species of Central and South American butterflies. The first two butterflies depicted are the Pink-banded Sisters, Adelpha lycorias, distinguished by their vibrant pink bands on the undersides of their wings. Next, we find the Orange-banded Shoemakers, Catonephele orites, with their striking orange and black bands and distinctive white spots. The Archeuptychia cluena, or the Blue-spotted Swallowtail, graces the fifth and sixth positions with its iridescent blue and black wings adorned with white spots. The Pink-banded Sisters, also known as the Nymphalis isis, are medium-sized butterflies native to Central and South America. They are known for their distinctive pink bands on the undersides of their wings, which help them blend in with the dead leaves on the forest floor. The Orange-banded Shoemakers, also known as Catonephele antiochus, are named for their bright orange and black bands and their resemblance to miniature shoemakers. They are found in Central and South America and are known for their unique mating behavior, where the male butterflies carry the female on their backs. The Archeuptychia cluena, or Blue-spotted Swallowtail, is a large and beautiful butterfly native to Central and South America. It is known for its iridescent blue and black wings, which are adorned with white spots. The butterfly is also sometimes called the Hipparchia cluena or the Cluena Swallowtail. This exquisite lithograph, produced during the 19th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the past and showcases the intricate beauty of these six remarkable butterfly species.
