Plaque to Captain J J Crowe VC, Nieuwkerke Hospice

The final German attempt to break through to the Channel ports, known as the Fourth Battle of Ypres, had initial success, and on 13 April 1918 the 2nd Worcesters were pushed back to the small village of Nieuwkerke, where they made a stand in the area of the Mairie. That evening the Germans entered the village and poured machine gun fire onto the defenders. Captain Crowe, the adjutant, realising that their position was becoming untenable, set off with a handful of volunteers to silence the guns. First they crawled and then charged, the fleeing Germans. However, further enemy re-inforcments arrived and, for silencing the guns and for allowing a controlled withdrawal of the Worcesters in later fighting, Captain Crowe was awarded the VC. Date: 2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This poignant plaque commemorates the bravery and heroism of Captain J J Crowe VC, who played a pivotal role in the defense of Nieuwkerke during the Fourth Battle of Ypres in World War I. On 13 April 1918, the German forces made a final attempt to break through to the Channel ports, initially pushing back the 2nd Worcesters to the small village of Nieuwkerke. That evening, as the Germans entered the village and poured machine gun fire onto the defenders, Captain Crowe, the adjutant, realized that their position was becoming untenable. Determined to silence the enemy guns and allow a controlled withdrawal of his men, Captain Crowe rallied a handful of volunteers and set off to charge. They first crawled towards the guns and then launched a daring attack, managing to silence them and allowing the Worcesters to retreat. However, further German reinforcements arrived, and the fighting continued. For his actions that day, Captain Crowe was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the face of the enemy. This plaque, located in Nieuwkerke Hospice, honors his sacrifice and bravery, a testament to the unwavering courage of the soldiers who fought in the Great War."
